what is a bar mitzvah?
A Bar Mitzvah is a Jewish tradition where an individual becomes an adult member of the Jewish faith. A Bar Mitzvah celebrates becoming a "Son of the Commandment" and a Bat Mitzvah celebrates becoming a "daughter of the Commandment".
During the service, tate will be called to the bima (front of the synagogue) to say prayers in Hebrew and English. Most significantly, this will be the first time he is allowed to read from the Torah in front of congregation.
Guests will observe the ceremony, but only a few people are expected to participate.
what should I expect at temple?
Attendees are rarely expected to do anything. Look proud of and impressed by tate!
All men should wear a yarmulke, which is a skullcap worn by Jewish men and boys in the synagogue during the service. They will be provided when you enter the synagogue.
When the ceremony is over, congratulate the Bar Mitzvah (tate) by saying "Mazel Tov!"
At the reception, we will say a prayer before eating and DANCE THE HORA!
